course purpose: these courses are designed for a beginner to traditional analog film developing and printing, or to those who need a refresher course. participants will gain basic knowlege of procedures and equipment used to develop and print traditional black and white film. students will attend one class, and then one 90 minute hands-on session in which they will actually develop film or make a print!

prerequisites: none; only the desire to learn how to develop film and/or to print negatives. those participants wishing to survey background material relating to this course should read "black & white photography for 35mm : a guide to photography and darkroom techniques" by Richard Mizdal (ISBN 0936262990).

participants: intended for age 16 and up. participants should bring writing materials to take notes. enrollment is limited. participants (or guardians) are required to sign a waiver of liability before attending the workshops.

traditional analog film developing: designed for the beginner (or anyone who needs a review) this workshop will teach you the basics of developing your own film at home. you’ll learn what chemicals and supplies you’ll need and where to get them. you’ll also bring an exposed roll of black and white film and develop it in the hands-on session! The initial class (friday, january 14, 2005 from 6:30 –9:30PM), will cover chemicals, tanks, temperatures, agitation, film loading techniques, and everything else you’ll need to know. the 90 minute hands-on sessions are scheduled on saturday and sunday the 15th and 16th, and you’ll develop your own film in professional stainless steel tanks with the support and assistance of kevin!


tuition for this class is $200.00. there is a required lab fee of $25.00 for all participants. your payment in full reserves your space in the workshop. because enrollment is limited, cancellations less than two weeks from the date of the workshop cannot be refunded. enrollment is limited. please check for availability!

traditional analog printing: designed for the beginner (or anyone who needs a review) this workshop will teach you the basics of traditional black and white printing. you’ll learn what chemicals and supplies you’ll need and where to get them, as well as the kind of eqipment needed. you’ll also bring your own black and white negatives and print them in the hands-on session! The initial class (friday, january 21, 2005 from 6:30 –9:30PM), will cover use of the enlarger, condenser vs. diffusion enlargers, grain focusing, chemicals, RC vs. fiber-based paper, contrast control, and will also introduce you to intermediate techniques like dodging and burning. the 90 minute hands-on sessions are scheduled on saturday and sunday the 22nd and 23rd, and you’ll work on a professional diffusion or condenser enlarger with the help and supervision of kevin!

tuition for this class is $200.00. there is a required lab fee of $35.00 for all participants. your payment in full reserves your space in the workshop. because enrollment is limited, cancellations less than two weeks from the date of the workshop cannot be refunded. enrollment is limited. please check for availability!

registration: must be paid in advance. because of the logistics involved registration cannot be accepted at the workshop. payment may be made by credit or debit card online through the paypal buttons above (this is the preferred method) or by money order or personal check. if you choose to pay by check, please call or email to confirm. please note that your space is not reserved until payment is received. If the class is full, you may request to be put on the waiting list in the event of a cancellation.

deadlines: paid registration for either session must be received 24 hours before the session start. sorry, but we cannot process payments upon arrival.

cancellation: cancellations can not be accepted for any reason after 7:00pm january 8, 2005. after that date, refunds can not be given, due to the limited enrollment of these workshops.

location and directions: the workshops will take place in oxnard, california (ventura county). the location is a block from the beach, which is a great place to take a break or go out shooting!

lodging: there are many hotels within a 10 minute drive if you would like to stay overnight. call or email us for details.

what to bring: bring writing materials to take notes. i encourage students to bring their negatives and prints (if they have them) for demonstrations and evaluation. it's also a good idea to bring some slides of your work if you have them.

meals: light snacks and drinks will be available during the workshop, but meals are not included in tuition fees. there are many restaurants nearby within a two minute drive, or students may pack a lunch.

parking: please obey all local parking regulations. there is plenty of parking available on the street, or in the free municipal harbor lot a block away.

other considerations: there is a cat present! (she is sort of a mascot.) if you have pet allergies, don't forget to bring your medicine.

about kevin: kevin j davidson is a professional photographer who works in both the wedding, portrait, commercial, and fine art fields. his work has sold internationally and has been published in the best of photography; they have also been shown in galleries in los angeles, pomona, and camarillo. he has over a decade of teaching experience at both the secondary and university levels.
